John and Darlene Backlund of Redmond each picked up a pair of medals recently at race-walk competitions in Florida.

At the USA National Masters 20-kilometer Race Walk Championships in Clermont, Fla., John Backlund earned a silver medal in the mens 65-to-60 age division with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 47 seconds.

In the womens ages 60 to 64 competition, Darlene Backlund claimed bronze and a third-place finish at the Nov. 13 race, completing the 20K course in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 35 seconds.

Earlier this month at the 2005 USA One Hour Race Walk Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., John Backlund covered 9,685 meters in an hour for a second-place finish in his age division, while Darlene Backlund placed third in her age group, after walking 8,382 meters in an hour.

The race-walking couple are now training for the 30-kilometer Race Walk Championships to be held Jan. 15 in Chula Vista, Calif.
