Crook County's Mike Gast, left, keeps control of the 125-pound match as Redmond's Tanner Robertson makes a shot in the closing minutes of their matchup in Prineville. Gast won 3-2.

PRINEVILLE – Seven Central Oregon wrestlers went home from the Intermountain Conference district meet with individual championships Saturday night, including three from Crook County and three from Redmond.

Hermiston rode a strong semifinal performance that yielded seven finalists to the district team championship. The Bulldogs, who finished with 352> team points, also netted three district titles and qualified 11 wrestlers for the Class 4A state meet.

The Bulldogs were followed in the team standings by Crook County (293>), Redmond (260), Pendleton (241), Mountain View (152), Hood River Valley (146>), The Dalles-Wahtonka (119), Bend (114>) and Summit (38).

Second-place Crook County qualified four wrestlers for the finals, but after the dust settled, six more Cowboys wrestled back through consolation rounds to take third place and qualify for state.

In all, 10 Crook County wrestlers qualified for the state meet next week in Salem. Crook County had qualified 11 wrestlers for the semifinal round Friday.

”We had a very rough semifinal round,” said Crook County coach Mike Shinkle. ”That was a tough blow to us.”

Crook County’s three champions came in the lower weights. Shane Rhoden crafted a 9-2 decision over Redmond’s Connor Flanagan at 119 pounds, then Mike Gast held on for a 3-2 decision over Tanner Robertson of Redmond at 125 pounds.

The Cowboys’ Ryan Smith was an easy winner at 140 pounds, where he played catch and release with Marty Britt of Hermiston for a 20-5 technical fall.

”I knew I could beat him on his feet,” said Smith, who let Britt escape five times and took him down seven times and scored another six near-fall points.

”He’s pretty good off the bottom, and I didn’t want to get into a scramble with him.”

Redmond’s J.D. Wilson, who scored two previous falls and a technical fall in the tournament, pinned Hermiston’s Darrin White at the end of the first minute in the match to win the championship at 171 pounds.

Butch Whitaker scored his second straight win over Hermiston’s Kevin Verwey in the 160-pound championship, and Austin Enoch wowed the crowd with a surprisingly easy 16-0 technical fall over Pendleton’s Drew Guthmiller.

”It was a transcendent performance. I don’t think you can teach the way he wrestles,” said Redmond coach Nathan Stanley, noting that his coaches see Enoch wrestle all the time. ”That time, I think he impressed a lot of our coaching staff with just how good he is.”

Mountain View’s Zach Moore posted a first-round fall to win the district championship at 103 pounds. In addition, the Cougars’ Garrett Gentry qualified for state with his second-place finish at 112 pounds.

Crook County’s Jess Cruise qualified in second place at 152 pounds, while Brett Gast (112), Jace Lewis (145), Micah Perry (152), Kelly Puckett (160), Kevin Cholin (171) and Tyrel Albert (275) qualified in third place.

Redmond’s Justin Martin (145), Flanagan and Robertson placed second at district, and Tanner Hase placed third at 189 pounds.

Tom Butler of Bend High qualified for state with a second-place finish at 215 pounds. Butler lost by fall to top-seeded Joe Williams of Pendleton in the final.

Summit was unable to qualify anyone for state, but Storm coach Jason Colquhoun was nonetheless pleased with the efforts turned in by his wrestlers.

He noted in particular the performances of Brandon Neuman (fifth at 160), Erik Tyvoll (seventh at 215) and Andrew Skidmore (eighth at 275).

The top three placers in each weight class qualified for the Class 4A state tournament, which begins Thursday and runs through next Saturday at The Pavilion at the State Fairgrounds.
