Redmond shelter crowded with dogs

The Humane Society of Redmond’s kennels dramatically overloaded this week with 29 beagles.
The beagles were suddenly homeless after a Klamath County beagle-breeding facility just south of the Deschutes County line shut down. Its owner died last month, said Jaime Kanski, the humane society’s executive director.
Temporary kennels had to be set up to help accommodate the humane society’s overflow, Kanski said. The humane society has 38 dog kennels, she said.
The beagle-breeding facility closed when the caretaker, who was looking after it following the owner’s death, became overwhelmed by work, said Bruce Angrimson, a Klamath County animal control officer.
The owner’s surviving son also did not want to take over the facility, which eventually led to the beagles’ relocation, Angrimson said.
The responsibility for looking after dozens of dogs not only took its toll on its former caretaker, but also on the dogs’ welfare. Kanski said some of the beagles arrived malnourished or in need of extra veterinary care because of illness.
”A veterinarian checked all of the beagles,” she said. The dogs not immediately ready to be adopted are being kept until they recover from illness or gain weight, she added.
Kanski said Friday she is in the middle of making arrangements with other Oregon animal shelters that have offered to take some of the beagles.
Offices like Eugene’s Greenhill Humane Society and the Oregon Humane Society in Portland have offered to take some of the beagles into their shelters, Kanski said. Each office offered to take seven to nine dogs, she said.
In the meantime, Kanski said some newborn puppies will be in foster care until old enough for adoption.
Kanski also said more dogs are on the way.
An undisclosed Central Oregon sharpei-breeding facility is downsizing and at least 60 of its dogs will come to Redmond, she said. The humane society will take 10 sharpeis at a time to be made available for adoption.
Kanski also said the humane society is in need of assistance in helping accommodate the dogs’ stay. It has received dog food offers, but it is also in need of monetary contributions because of the beagles’ veterinary care.
