Carnival at The Grove tonight

Bend will get its own mini-version of the legendary Brazilian carnival tonight as Bay Area rockers Bat Makumba invade The Grove.

The band fuses rock, punk and funk with Latin sounds such as samba and forro to get the dance floor jumping. Frontman Alex Koberle uses a bullhorn to stir up the crowd, while percussionist Emiliano Benevides powers the group’s pulsing beats. Keyboards and horns are tossed into the soup to spice things up a bit.

”It’s high energy, for sure. We want to get it bumping, get people dancing and sweating,” Koberle said. ”When I come off stage, I’m drenched.”

Bat Makumba’s self-titled 2003 debut won the band a California Music Award for Best Latin Alternative Album, and newspapers around the Bay Area have hailed the group as one that deserves attention.

The show starts at 10 p.m. at The Grove, 1033 NW Bond St., in Bend. Admission is $8 and the show is for ages 21 and over.
