STANFIELD – Culver made the most of what likely was its final appearance at the Columbia Basin Conference Track and Field Championships.
The Bulldogs, who next year will compete in a different league as part of the OSAA’s planned six-classification system, came away with the boys team championship at the CBC district meet, which concluded Saturday at Stanfield High School.
Culver finished with 137 team points, placing ahead of Stanfield and Umatilla, which tied for second with 127, at the eight-school event.
”I’m just elated, absolutely happy as can be. We won with hard work, mental discipline, integrity and class,” said Culver coach Brian Wachs.
The Bulldogs had two individual district champs, as Travis Beebe won the 800 meters (2:04.77) and Juan Terrazas won the 1,500 (4:30.64). The Bulldogs also claimed district titles in the 4 x 100 relay (Jared Roen, Nevin Lewis, DelRay Rhoan and Adrian Gutierrez finished in 46.32) and 4 x 400 relay (Roen, Lewis, Rhoan and Beebe shattered the school record to win in 3:33.24).
Also advancing to state with second-place finishes – the top two placers in each event qualify for the Class 2A state championship meet, next Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth – were Roen (400 and high jump) and Terrazas (3,000).
The Culver girls also fared well, finishing in fourth place with 70 points among the eight teams. Sherman amassed 177 points to win the district title, followed by Umatilla with 145 and Stanfield with 72.
Culver’s Stefanie Hamlin qualified for state in the 1,500 (5:52.77) and 3,000 (12:56.60), finishing second in both events. Joining her will be Gabbi Hawk, who earned a trip to the state meet by clearing 7 feet in the pole vault. Hawk took second place and established a new personal best.
