Lions and tigers and Doc! Oh, my!
In his only 2006 appearance in Oregon, legendary flatpicker Doc Watson will perform at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, July 21. The concert is part of the 28th Annual Summer Concert Series, June 21-Aug. 23.
Completely blind from an eye infection before his first birthday, Watson began playing the guitar at the age of 13, according to his biography. Known for his smooth baritone voice and intricate flatpicking – a melodic style of picking the guitar with a plectrum – his music blends traditional Appalachian musical roots with bluegrass, country, gospel and blues.
Recipient of the National Medal of Arts, National Heritage Fellowship and seven Grammy Awards (including a 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award), Watson was recognized as a ”national treasure” by President Jimmy Carter. He currently performs with his grandson Richard Watson and David Holt. The concert will also feature legendary guitarist Leo Kottke.
Sponsored by Wells Fargo and Fred Meyer, the Summer Concert Series at the Oregon Zoo will present 18 performances during June, July and August including the Indigo Girls, Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, and Etta James.
A portion of the proceeds benefits the Oregon Zoo’s conservation and education programs. Current conservation projects include efforts to save threatened and endangered species such as Northwest butterflies, western pond turtles, Washington pygmy rabbits and California condors.
Concertgoers can add $1 to their ticket price to donate to the new Black Bear Ridge exhibit, opening March 2007.
