Bernice G. (Haines) Durfee of Bend died Friday. She was 88.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond. A reception will follow from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Deschutes County Expo Center in Redmond.

Mrs. Durfee was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Bend to Charles and Sophia Haines. She married William Durfee on Dec. 18, 1937, in Bend.

Mrs. Durfee worked as an office nurse at Redmond Memorial Clinic. She and her family owned the Tetherow Bridge property and donated it to the state as a perpetual park. She was a member of the Central Oregon District Hospital Auxiliary, Juniper Golf Club, Juniper Literary Club and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also volunteered for the Bloodmobile and served on the election board. She enjoyed bridge and dominoes.

Survivors include three sons, W.H. of Crooked River Ranch, Robert of Redmond and John of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Carmen Smith of Redmond and Toni Spencer of Woodburn; a brother, Byron Haines of Seattle; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home, Redmond Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
