HILLSBORO – The District 5 champion Redmond Little League majors-minors softball team bagged its division state championship title on Wednesday night with a 14-5 victory over District 4 champion Cedar Mill of Beaverton, in the final game of the Majors-Minors Softball Little League State Tournament at the Alpenrose Sports Complex.

Cassidy Edwards pitched a complete game to earn Redmond major-minors (10-11) softball its first Little League championship. Edwards gave up two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Cedar Mill opened up a 5-0 lead after two innings but in the third inning, Redmond began closing the gap, bringing in two runs with a double by Jess Nurge, scoring Kaylee Wilson.

Redmond broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring 11 runs with a double and single by Edwards and hits from Tiffani Milliman and Ashley Pesek. Redmond added one more run in the sixth by Jade Cupp.

”The girls never gave up in any of the games,” said Redmond team manager Jeff Edwards. ”They battled, put the ball in play, and capitalized on mistakes. The coaches and I are very proud of the team. The girls earned the title.”

Redmond advanced to the championship game with a 7-5 victory over District 7 champion West Salem on Tuesday.

According to Edwards, the semifinal game was close throughout as Redmond played strong defense while West Salem’s pitching nearly threw Redmond’s hitters off their game.

In the West Salem game, Redmond’s Pesek took over the mound in the third inning, throwing six strikeouts, three walks and giving up one hit.

Redmond jumped to a 2-1 lead after the first inning with back-to-back hits by Nurge and Cassidy Edwards coupled with aggressive base running, Jeff Edwards said. West Salem tied up the game at the top of the second inning, but Redmond answered at the bottom of the inning with a run by Kennedi Curnutt to take a 3-2 lead. West Salem took advantage of back-to-back walks and a base hit to tie the game 3-3.

In the fifth inning, West Salem scored two runs for a 5-3 advantage, until Redmond’s Pesek hit a double, scoring Cupp, to pull Redmond back to a 5-4 deficit. The intensity of the game was turned up in bottom of the sixth inning, said Jeff Edwards, when Cupp led off with a single. Wilson then moved Cupp into a scoring position, and with two outs, Nurge hit a single through the infield, moving the tieing run to third. Cassidy Edwards then drew a walk to load the bases, and Milliman drove a shot over West Salem’s right fielder to score all three base runners and clinching a 7-5 victory.
