Support 46, 47

Your editorial ”Why good voters back bad measures” was juvenile, comparing the well-researched, sophisticated Measure 47 to impetuous vandalism and calling it ”loopy.”

It’s no surprise that all the political bottom feeders and buzzards are up in arms about this measure (including the media); it will severely reduce their supply of carrion and pond muck to feed upon. Fortunately, Measure 47 will also reduce the accompanying stink.

The limits proposed by this measure far exceed typical political expenditures by individuals. Its 16 pages are all part of an essential prescription to fix Oregon’s festering 300-plus-page elections laws.

It would be nice to reduce Measure 47 to one-page pablum that editorial boards could understand after a five-minute meeting. But then it would accomplish nothing. For too long, Oregonians have had their individual free speech drowned out by out-of-state, and in-state, big-money loudmouths. It’s time to inject some fairness, sanity and self-discipline into the process. Measures 46 and 47 fill that bill.
