- Jello Biafra made his name as the leader of the punk group Dead Kennedys, but on Wednesday he'll give a spoken-word performance at the Domino Room in Bend.
Punk rock icon and political activist Jello Biafra will give a spoken-word performance Wednesday at The Domino Room in Bend.
Biafra is best known as the original frontman for Dead Kennedys, the seminal 1980s hardcore band that played overtly political music and was at the center of a censorship debate over the cover of its 1985 album ”Frankenchrist.”
The three longtime Dead Kennedys besides Biafra are still together as a band and are using a different vocalist. Biafra and his old band mates have had more than their share of legal disputes through the years over royalties and other things.
Biafra has spent the last two decades collaborating with other musicians and releasing spoken-word albums. His spoken-word work comes from a decidedly left-wing perspective, with topics including freedom of speech, the war on drugs, energy dependence and life in suburban America.
Biafra, whose name is a combination of the wiggly dessert Jell-O and the name of the short-lived nation Biafra that tried to secede from Nigeria in the late 1960s, has a new album coming out Tuesday called ”In the Grip of Official Treason,” a triple-disc set on which he covers the war in Iraq, election fraud and Hurricane Katrina’s effect on New Orleans, among other subjects.
Promoter Bret Grier, of Random Presents, says Wednesday night’s show should be a three- to four-hour performance, and the Domino Room will be a seated venue for the night. The show will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. and tickets costing $13 plus service charges in advance and $15 at the door.
Advance tickets are available at Ranch Records (389-6116) or through TicketsWest at www .ticketswest.com or the Safeway at 642 N.E. Third Street. Charge by phone at 800-992-8499.
The Domino Room is located at 51 N.W. Greenwood Ave., in Bend.
