Football squads back in action

The road to victory becomes tougher and the stakes are higher this weekend when four Central Oregon teams resume action in the state high school football playoffs.

Top-ranked and unbeaten Sisters makes its seventh appearance in the quarterfinals Friday night, as the Outlaws host unheralded Gladstone in the Class 4A playoffs at 7 o’clock at Reed Stadium.

Sisters (11-0) is coming off a resounding 43-12 second-round victory Friday night in which Nate Jackson scored three touchdowns, Jeff Sampson rushed for two touchdowns, and state-rushing leader Cory McCaffrey added a touchdown scamper.

Culver (11-1) is playing for a spot in the state championship final Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Cottage Grove High School for an 11 a.m. Class 2A semifinal matchup with Bonanza.

The fifth-ranked Bulldogs are coming off a 28-0 shutout of Corbett on Saturday. Jeremy Thompson scored two touchdowns – one offensive, one defensive – as Culver outgained Corbett 304-164.

Mountain View and Bend High are among the elite eight for Saturday’s Class 5A state quarterfinals.

The Cougars (8-2) are in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999 and will host Lebanon Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jack Harris Stadium.

Mountain View matched its season-high for points in a 47-20 second-round win at Cleveland. Sean Koepf rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns while Seth Davies passed for 150 yards and threw three touchdowns.

The Lava Bears (8-3), the No. 4 seed from the Intermountain Conference who have won two playoff games this month, host top-ranked and unbeaten West Albany Saturday at 1 p.m. at Punk Hunnell Stadium.

Bend is fresh off a 38-24 win at fourth-ranked Crater. Mark Speck rushed for 245 yards and scored four touchdowns in the victory.

Admission to all state quarterfinals is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets for the semifinals are $7 for adults and $5 for students.
