Madras pulls off victory over Columbia River

MADRAS – Jansen Harrington buried six three-point baskets en route to a game-high 22 points to lead Madras to a 69-59 boys basketball victory over Columbia River of Vancouver, Wash., Friday night.
The game was part of the annual Bob McKenzie Memorial Tournament, which continues today when Astoria plays Columbia River at 4 p.m. and Madras faces Skyview of Vancouver, Wash., at 6 p.m.
Harrington’s six treys were part of the 14 three-point total made by the White Buffaloes, who outscored Columbia River 40-27 in the second half.
A.J. Adams and Albert Adams each added nine points, and Carson Ahern and Ethan Adams each scored seven points for Madras (1-0).
Steven Bjornstad had 19 points and Kyle Thurston added 17 points for Columbia River.

KLAMATH FALLS – Bend High roared to an early lead, then held on to win its season opener. Kent Ervin led a balanced Lava Bear scoring night with 13 points. Drew Sampson added 12 points, Cameron McGuire scored 10, and Garrett Kroll tallied nine for Bend, which led 18-4 after the first quarter. Tyler Fristedt led the Bears in rebounding with seven, and McGuire grabbed six boards. Sampson was credited with a team-leading four steals, and Ervin registered three assists. Bend plays this afternoon at Klamath Union.

Thirteen different players got into the scoring column as the Cougars opened the season with a resounding nonleague victory at home. Nick Klein led four players in double figures with 12 points. Matt Klein, Abe Lodwick and Jacob Eades each added 11 points, and Dallin Wilcox finished with six assists and zero turnovers. Mountain View’s pressure defense forced Eagle Point into 28 turnovers.

REDMOND – The Panthers, plauged by turnovers, lost at home to the Lions in a matchup of Class 6A teams. Redmond (1-1) was able to keep the score close for the majority of the game, but committed 29 turnovers. After tying up the game late in the fourth quarter, Redmond found itself in foul trouble after turning the ball over yet again, allowing West Linn to with the game at the free-throw line. Tyler Rucinsky led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points.

KLAMATH FALLS – The host Pelicans raced to a 12-0 lead and handed the visiting Storm its first loss of the season. ”They outplayed us in every facet of the game at the start,” said Summit coach Curt Shelley. ”They’re a very quick and very well-coached team.” Harlan Porterfield scored 10 points – he made three three-point baskets – to lead the Storm (1-1). Sean Evert added seven points and Jordan Hill and Alec Botts scored six apiece for Summit, which plays at Crater next Friday.

Nevin Lewis scored 18 points and Andrew Hansen added 14 to lead Culver to its first victiry of the season in a three-team Mountain View JV Tournament. The Bulldogs (1-1) made no three-point goals but were good on 17 of 24 free-throw attempts. Culver takes on the Mountain View junior varsity today at 11 a.m.

PROSPECT – Aaron Phillips nailed five three-point field goals en route to a game-high 28 points, leading Crook County Christian past Prospect, host of the four-team Prospect Tournament. Tyler Hershey scored 14 points and had 10 assists for the winners in their season opener. Phillips had nine rebounds for Crook County Christian, which faces Cascade Christian today for the championship of the four-team tourney.
