Storm girls split league openers

Summit opened its Intermountain Conference girls tennis season Saturday by splitting two league matches against Hermiston and Pendleton.

The Storm opened the day by tying the host Bulldogs 4-4 in matches, but Hermiston was awarded the team victory by virtue of its 9-8 advantage in sets won. Charlotte Thompson and Camille Grater each won singles decisions in straight sets for Summit.

Against Pendleton, the Storm swept the four doubles matches in straight sets. The team of Alaina Balyeat and Emma Funk helped lead the Storm charge, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win at first doubles. Summit’s No. 1 singles player, Laura Krull, the defending league champion, topped Jenny Beamer 6-1, 6-0.

The White Buffaloes had mixed results as they opened IMC play.

At Pendleton, Madras pulled out three wins. The White Buffaloes’ Chelsea Asbury defeated Robin Wallace, 6-1, 6-2 to take the No. 3 singles match, and Meagan Fine won the No. 4 singles match over Jaclynn Gambill, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Madras team of Tamera Moody and Kadie Manion defeated Taylor Jerome and Liz Winter, 6-3, 6-1, to win the No. 3 doubles match.

At Hermiston, Madras was unable to win a match, as the highly regarded Bulldogs took every contest in straight sets. Rebecca Berger of Hermiston took the No. 1 singles match over Addie Estimo, 6-0, 6-0.

Rain dampens Bend tourney

The High Desert Exchange Girls Tennis Invitational, held at Bend High and Juniper Park, was delayed due to rain and cut short because of darkness. Bend won two matches, edging Corvallis 4-4 (9-8 in sets) and topping Klamath Union 5-0. Mountain View dropped its match to Churchill 5-3. The Lava Bears’ saw several repeat winners on the day: Skyler Nelson won both of her singles matches in the No. 1 spot, Allison Hamel won two matches in the No. 2 position, the team of A.J. Nelson and Emily Ziegler won both of their No. 1 doubles matches, and Kelsi Fraley was twice on the winning No. 2 doubles team. For the Cougars, Barb Sneckner was victorious in the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 7-5 over Churchill’s Alyssa Adkisson.

The Storm dropped its highly anticipated matchup with Hermiston, but rebounded to dominate Pendleton to open the Intermountain Conference season.

At Hermiston, the Bulldogs swept the four doubles matches to earn the win. Summit’s wins came in three sets from Cody Kohlmoos at No. 2 singles and Jordan Smith at No. 4 singles.

At Pendleton, the Storm swept the four singles matches to topple the Buckaroos. Josh Guyer recorded a solid victory for Summit at first singles, defeating Shann West, a district placer in 2006, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0.

Madras opened league play by dropping matches at Pendleton and at Hermiston.

Against the Buckaroos, Madras won three of the four doubles matches but was swept in singles play in straight sets. Skyler Sensibaugh and Mervyn Garcia rebounded from a 7-6 loss in the first set to top Matt Peterson and Jared Britton 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Sensibaugh and Garcia were the only Madras players to win a set against the Bulldogs. They dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 doubles decision to Kenneth Gregory and Derek Harman.
