Big bats help lead Madras

The White Buffaloes had been waiting all season to light up the scoreboard.

And they broke out their bats in a big way on Tuesday against Mountain View.

Madras smacked 16 hits in a 14-11 Intermountain Conference baseball win over the Cougars at Mountain View High School.

Albert Adams led the White Buffaloes, going three for five with a double, a home run and five RBIs.

”This is the first time we’ve had a hitting game,” said Adams. ”It’s probably our best offensive performance of the season. Everybody came up to the plate aggressive. Everybody had confidence, and we won the game with offense.”

In the top of the fifth inning, Darrell Ceciliani hit a triple off the right-field fence to score two runs and give Madras (3-1 IMC, 6-6 overall) an 11-7 lead.

Adams then came to the plate and hit a fastball over the fence in left-center field. The two-run shot gave the Buffaloes a six-run cushion.

”I was just being patient,” Adams said. ”I came back from an 0-2 count, took it to full, and hit that home run. It was a fastball down the middle. I was just trying to get a ground ball, but the pitch was up.”

Mountain View (1-1 IMC, 6-8 overall) scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a triple by Tyler Sustare to make it 13-11, but Madras added a run in the seventh on a double by Adams and hung on to win.

The two teams combined for 12 runs in the first two innings as Madras took an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the second.

”Our offense pulled us through today,” said Madras coach Kevin Cave. ”We didn’t pitch or field well, but we sure hit the ball. I don’t think we’ve put up runs like that this season yet. Our bats really woke up.

”It’s good to have three league wins this early.”

Ceciliani was two for four with a double, a triple and four RBIs for Madras. He was also the Buffaloes’ starting pitcher. He gave up just three hits in five innings, but he walked three batters and hit two more, keeping Mountain View in the game.

Jacob Prow relieved Ceciliani in the fifth, and he scattered three hits in three innings to close out the game, but also gave up four walks. Prow was two for four at the plate with three RBIs.

Speedy leadoff hitter Bobby Thurby of Madras was three for three with three infield singles.

Sustare led Mountain View, going two for three with a triple and three RBIs. The Cougars’ Brandon Shotwell was also two for three with a triple and three RBIs.

Mountain View starting pitcher Hayden Mace gave up nine runs on 11 hits in 3?226-130? innings.

”They (the Buffaloes) kept us in the game by walking us and hitting us,” said Mountain View coach Dave Williams. ”They kept putting us on base and we stuck around until the end. But they just put the ball in play and we didn’t know what to do with it.”

The Cougars had just two errors, but gave up seven infield singles to the Buffaloes.

”It’s early, and there’s no need to panic, but I’d like to see us play better defensively,” Williams said.

Madras hosts Hermiston in an IMC doubleheader on Saturday, and Mountain View entertains The Dalles-Wahtonka in another twin bill on Saturday.
