THE DALLES – League-leading The Dalles-Wahtonka continued its mastery of Intermountain Conference opponents by sweeping a softball doubleheader from Madras on Saturday.
The hard-hitting Eagle Indians recorded 25 hits on the day, as they won the opener 7-2 and took the second game 13-3 in five innings to improve to 8-0 in the IMC and 16-2 overall.
”They’re a good hitting team,” said Madras coach Shawna McConnell, whose club played The Dalles-Wahtonka as close as any IMC team has this season.
Jessica Wood went three for four for the Eagle Indians in the opener. Holly Martin hit a double for Madras, which scored two runs in the sixth inning.
The Dalles-Wahtonka got a grand slam from Laurie Jones as part of a 10-run second inning as the Eagle Indians took control early in the second game. Shirelle Adams was three for three with an RBI and two runs scored for the White Buffaloes (4-4 IMC, 10-8 overall).
”We had some hits, but didn’t put them together for any rallies,” said McConnell. ”Defensively, we played very good today.”
Madras returns to IMC play Tuesday afternoon at Crook County.
In other Saturday games:
Hermiston 11-11
Bend 0-2
HERMISTON – The Lava Bears dropped both road games and continue to search for their first league win.
Bend’s three hits in the first game came from Katelyn Hammond, Samantha Fillmore and Natalie Evers.
Bright spots in the second game for the Lava Bears (0-7 IMC, 1-16 overall) included Emily Fillmore’s fifth-inning single that scored Marissa DiTunno, and freshman Ashlei Noble stealing third and home to give Bend its second run. Cassie Conte had two singles and played tough defense at third base, noted Bend coach Mary Evers.
The Lava Bears host Mountain View on Wednesday.
Pendleton 13-13
Mountain View 2-1
The Buckaroos certainly did not appear road weary after the long bus ride to Bend, as they won both games of the doubleheader against the Cougars in convincing fashion.
Stephanie Oles smacked two home runs and had five RBIs in Pendleton’s game one win.
The Buckaroos then built a 16-3 advantage in hits on their way to winning the second game of the twin bill. Brittany Powell tripled and scored to give Mountain View its only run in game two.
The Cougars (1-6 IMC, 5-13) play at Bend High on Wednesday.
Culver 12
Salem Academy 5
SALEM – The Bulldogs persevered in rainy conditions to take the road win on a field that had turned to soup, according to Culver coach Kevin Urbach. Culver (5-4 Special District 3, 9-6 overall) took an early lead after scoring four runs in the first inning. Its lead was never threatened as the Bulldogs tallied runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings in the game cut short by rain. Tiffany Adams, Kayley Cook and Megan Hamlin had two singles apiece in the five-inning game.
