MADRAS – It took a few innings for the Madras offense to get on track, but once the bats warmed up they really came to life.
The White Buffaloes broke open a tight 2-1 game by scoring 13 runs in the fourth inning en route to a 15-1 Intermountain Conference softball victory over visiting Bend High on Tuesday.
Madras (5-7 IMC, 11-11 overall) had five extra-base hits during its big fourth inning, which was sparked by an inside-the-park home run to right field by Marisa Hulsey.
The game was called in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.
”We weren’t really hitting at the beginning of the game,” said Madras coach Shawna McConnell. ”The girls were trying to kill the ball. We told them to just settle down and make contact.”
Seven of the White Buffaloes’ 11 hits went for extra bases, including triples hit by Hansina Martin, Holly Martin and Rachel Aimone. Shirelle Adams went two for four with two RBIs and scored three runs, Holly Martin had two RBIs and scored two runs, and Hansina Martin and Aimone each scored two runs.
Bend (0-11 IMC, 1-20 overall) scored its run in the top of the third when the Lava Bears had three of their five hits. Natalie Evers hit a one-out single back up the middle to plate Samantha Fillmore, who led off the inning by reaching base on a dropped third strike.
Bend returns to league play Thursday when it plays at Mountain View. Madras is off until next Tuesday’s league game at Summit.
