- Holly and David Prull, both of Bend, run along the Deschutes River during the Salmon Run 5K on Saturday morning, complete with kids and strollers.
Local runners came out in droves on Saturday, streaming onto the streets from McKay Park near downtown Bend for the Salmon Run 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races. In all, 213 racers finished the 10K, and the 5K had 152 finishers, with the majority of the participants coming from Bend.
”There was a good sized crowd,” said Holly Smith, who ran the 5K with her husband David Prull, pushing their two young sons in a stroller for the entire race. Smith is a member of the Environmental Center board of directors, the organization that put the race on to raise money for watershed education on the Deschutes River and its tributaries.
Grant Folske of Beaverton won the 10K with a time of 34 minutes, 31.4 seconds. Marshall Greene of Bend finished second, and Zach Violett, also of Bend, took third.
First place for the women in the 10K was Bend’s Evelyn Dong with a time of 40 minutes. Two more Bend runners filled out the top three in the race, as Jenny Marine took second place and Jill Gozdowski finished third.
In the 5K, Bend residents filled the top places as well. First place finisher Josh Davis cruised in at 17:19, Tim Nelson took second and Ryan Ness was third.
Lindsay Gaviglio of Sisters won the 5K for the women, clocking in at 21:38. Both the second and third-place finishers came from Bend, with Katie Sheldon beating out Joanne Stevens by less than three seconds for second place.
The rush of the river at McKay Park was a reminder of the cause for Saturday’s Salmon Run. This year the funds will go toward a grant to help restore Tumalo Creek, according to Smith.
