- If you liked Harry Potter ...
The Harry Potter phenomenon may be in high gear
at the moment, but in one week, kids and adults will no longer have a new installment to look forward to.
While no one book or series is likely ever to fully replace Harry Potter, experts do point to several books or series of books that may fulfill the same niche. The following list of books comes from the Deschutes Public Library System, associate professor Philip Nel and lecturer Craig Svonkin. For more suggestions, visit the If you like Harry Potter book list page on the librarys Web site, www.dpls.lib.or.us.

These books are older and a bit more advanced than the Harry Potter books. They follow the adventures of a young pig keeper.

The books follow a young boy who serves as a wizards apprentice and how his powers grow and change.
His Dark Materials Trilogy

One of the books, The Golden Compass, will be made into a movie later this year. The books are about the church and free will. Nel calls Pullman a better writer than J.K. Rowling.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis:
These classic books follow brothers and sisters who enter the magical world of Narnia.

The story of Frodo and the ring is a classic for a good reason.

These books take place in a parallel version of England in which magicians have established a kind of dictatorship.

Fantasy adventure books with a sense of humor.
The Merlin, series by T.A. Baron:

The Wee Free Men
by Terry Pratchett:
The book follows young Tiffany Aching as she tries to become a witch. Del calls this author very fun to teach and hilarious.
