HorrorPops comes complete with go-go dancers

What do rock ’n’ roll bands do during the summer?

Some tour and play festivals. Some hole up in a studio and record. Others take a couple of months off to gear up for touring or recording in the fall. But for HorrorPops, who’ll play in Bend on Tuesday, this summer has a little something different on the agenda: auditioning go-go dancers.

If go-go dancers seem like a relic from rock’s past, meet HorrorPops, the campy psychobilly punks originally from Denmark who have long employed two girls to dance on stage to the band’s playful mix of punk, rockabilly, surf, pop and whatever else strikes its fancy.

A HorrorPops gig just wouldn’t be complete without a couple of bobbing, weaving, hustling, shuffling, tattooed gals strutting their stuff on either side of frontwoman Patricia Day and her ornate, technicolor upright bass.

That’s because the band puts on a heck of a show, with Day prowling the stage like a zombie Gwen Stefani, guitarist Kim Nekroman’s sky-high hair punctuating his spooky riffs, and Niedermeier keeping the beat. (The band is a trio again after the recent departure of rhythm guitarist Geoff Kresge.)

HorrorPops have been kicking around since 1996, with two albums under their belt, both released on Hellcat Records. A third LP, called “KissKissKillKill,” is in the can and will be released some time next year, according to the band’s MySpace blog.

But back to the good stuff: go-go dancer auditions. When former dancer Kamilla left to spend time doing other things, the group put out a call to all women “between 21 and 100” to send in audition tapes. They got 200, narrowed the field to 11 and invited those women to Los Angeles to dance for the band.

And now, at www.myspace.com/thehorrorpops, you can peek in on the process. There are three episodes of “HorrorPop TV” at the site, featuring four dancers — Midnight, Zombie Katt, Hillary and Moe — in “American Idol”-style tryouts. More videos are supposed to come, along with an announcement of the newest HorrorPops go-go dancer. Feel the excitement!

On Tuesday, the band will roll through Bend, stopping to play at the Domino Room, at 51 N.W. Greenwood Ave. The show will begin at about 8 p.m. with opening sets by The Briggs and the amazing Seattle power-pop band Steve E. Nix and The Cute Lepers. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $13 plus service charges in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Boomtown (388-1800) in Bend and through Ticketswest at www.ticketswest.com and the Safeway at 642 N.E. Third St., in Bend. Charge by phone at 800-992-8499.
