Oregon minimum wage to rise Jan. 1

On Jan. 1., the Oregon minimum wage will increase from $7.80 per hour to $7.95 per hour, state Labor Commissioner Dan Gardner announced Wednesday. Only California and Massachusetts, which will have $8-per-hour rates next year, would be higher — for now. Washington state, which currently has the highest minimum rate of $7.93 per hour, is expected to be the highest in 2008, although its increase hasn’t been announced. Oregon’s 15-cent jump represents a cost-of-living increase for Oregon minimum-wage workers, although the labor department acknowledges that a minimum-wage worker supporting a three-person family would still fall below the 2007 poverty level. The federal minimum wage will increase next year from $5.15 per hour to $5.85 per hour, its first increase in more than a decade.
