Joseph Gene O’Neil, of Crooked River Ranch, died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 61.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Portland. A memorial service will follow at International Longshoremens and Warehousemen’s Union Local No. 8 in Portland.

Mr. O’Neil was born April 22, 1946, in Oakland, Calif., the son of Ray and Pat (Alum) O’Neil. He graduated from high school in Parkrose. He married Alice O’Neil.

Mr. O’Neil served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1966. He worked as a longshoreman in Portland. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Klamath Falls, and he was board member for Local No. 8 Federal Credit Union for 19 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing Texas Hold ’Em, baseball, travel, the sea and spending time with family. He moved to Crooked River Ranch two years ago.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Ray, of Seattle, J.P. and Tony, both of Portland, Mark Hornych, of Portland, and Adam Hornych, of Mesa, Ariz.; four daughters, Dawn, Julie, Jan Mitchell and Cindy Hornych, all of Portland; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and his parents.

Autumn Funerals of Redmond is in charge of arrangements.
