Afroman follows the beat of his own drum

Colt 45 hat? Check. Double-necked guitar? Check. Afroman is in the house!

A lot of musicians claim they do things their way. And perhaps they do, to an extent.

But few do things their way quite like Joseph “Afroman” Foreman.

The Palmdale, Calif.-based rapper, who will perform Thursday at the Domino Room in Bend (see “If You Go”), knows what it’s like to be knee-deep in the business side of music.

His song “Because I Got High” was one of the biggest hits of 2001, thanks in part to plays on Howard Stern’s radio show and in the cult-hit film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” Soon after came a greatest-hits collection, which presumably contained Afroman’s one hit and a bunch of other tracks.

For years now, however, the smooth, good-times rapper has been releasing his music on his own terms, via his label, Hungry Hustler Records. That independence means he can do things such as release four records in one year. Or give his albums titles like “Drunk’n’High” and “A Colt 45 Christmas” without worrying about what Wal-Mart might think.

Or use more marijuana-themed artwork and images than an entire shelf full of “High Times” magazines.

Speaking of which, Afroman’s newest album is called “Waiting to Inhale,” and it’s only available for download from his Web site, www.afromanmusic.com, or at his shows. If you want it, don’t bother waiting until it’s released in a more conventional way, because this record seems unlikely to ever make it into a store.

You see, many of the tracks are parodies of hit songs by big-time stars such as Young Jeezy, Black Eyed Peas and Danity Kane.

And then there’s “I Know All About You,” a plain-spoken (read: profane) response to Beyoncé’s mega-hit song “Irreplaceable.” You can hear it at Afroman’s MySpace, but be warned: It’s raunchy. Jay-Z, aka Mr. Beyoncé, would not be amused.

But something tells us Afroman isn’t worried about that. As noted, Afroman has played the game. Now he’s playing it his way.
