Storm fall to Spartans

It was back-and-forth for two quarters, but the disciplined half-court defense of Corvallis eventually wore down Summit, as the Spartans were able to run away to a 63-47 victory in the semifinal round of the AmeriTitle Holiday Invitational at Summit High School on Friday.

“(Corvallis is) well coached,” said Storm coach Dan Munson after the loss. “They’re a state caliber-team. It’s a preview of what we need to be.”

Summit hung with Corvallis for the first eight minutes, down only three after the first quarter. But the Storm (5-4) slipped in the second and third periods when the Spartans began to penetrate Summit’s defense.

Much of Corvallis’ scoring came from the foul line, where the Spartans made 24 of 33 shots. Summit was nine of 11 from the line.

Nick Eason led the Spartans with 13 points. Storm senior post Patrick Laubacher put up a game-best 14 points, and teammates Mason Ross and Matson Hardie each added nine points.

“We’ve got so many guys,” Munson said. “If someone’s not getting it done, I have no problem platooning in someone else.”

With the win, Corvallis advances to today’s championship game at 4:15 p.m. against Rex Putnam.

Considering Summit played Corvallis even in the fourth quarter, 19-19, Munson said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“(Corvallis is) a talented team,” Munson said. “I’m glad we got to play them. But this game was more about getting ready for league.”

Munson is looking to execute better in the half-court offense in today’s consolation game against Churchill at 12:45 p.m., and is anxious to see if his team can come out with energy after playing two days in a row.
