The Lead Eye Bugger is another variation of a Woolly Bugger. Its lead eyes make it move with a weight-forward motion that suggests a swimming leech or a big-eyed, vulnerable baitfish, headed for the bottom. Tie it in olive for a passable dragon fly imitation.

On the river, fish it on a floating line to search out pocket water. On the lake, use a floating or a slow-sinking line in deeper water. Use a retrieve to match the most likely food source.

Tie the Lead Eye Bugger on a No. 8 long wet fly hook. Secure the eyes with a figure-8 wrap at the head of the fly. For the tail, use black marabou. Build the body with black chenille and wrap a black hackle forward to the head. Leave a two-inch tag of chenille behind the eyes. Take an extra turn of the hackle behind the head. Pull the chenille tag down between the eyes in a double wrap, building up the head.
