- Oregon’s Tajuan Porter, front, is chased by Oregon State’s Joey McConnell of Madras during the first half of Sunday’s game in Corvallis.
CORVALLIS — Maarty Leunen’s made his final Civil War a memorable one.
The University of Oregon senior from Redmond scored a career-high 32 points and Oregon ended the game on a 12-3 run as the Ducks defeated Oregon State 80-68 on Sunday night.
Leunen hit six of his seven three-point attempts in the second half as Oregon (16-12, 7-9 Pacific-10 Conference) broke a three-game losing streak and won the 329th meeting between the schools, the most in college basketball.
“If my feet are square and my shoulders are square, I can shoot it with the best of them,” said Leunen.
For the game, Leunen was eight of 10 shooting from the field, including seven of eight from three-point range. He entered the weekend leading the Pac-10 in three-point shooting percentage at .500, making 48 of 96 attempts.
“Honestly, those weren’t plays that they run for me,” Leunen said of his second-half shots. “Guys were just creating off the dribble.”
Oregon coach Ernie Kent said he wants Leunen to shoot the ball more as the season winds down.
“We just can’t seem to get him to figure that out; that the more he shoots and the way he shoots the ball, the more he can score,” Kent said.
Oregon’s LeKendric Longmire came off the bench to hit all six of his field-goal attempts as he finished with a career-high 14 points.
Lathen Wallace had 18 points for Oregon State (6-22, 0-16), which suffered its 18th consecutive loss and saw its all-time series advantage over Oregon trimmed to 180-149. The Beavers are on the verge of becoming the first team to finish winless in Pac-10 play since the conference’s expansion before the 1978-79 season.
Marcel Jones had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Beavers, and Calvin Haynes added 16.
The OSU starting lineup included a new face: Joey McConnell. A junior walk-on from Madras, McConnell made his first start ever for the Beavers and appeared in just his fifth game of the season. The 6-foot-4-inch guard made two free throws for a total of two points.
Oregon State cut an eight-point second-half deficit to 68-65 with 3:27 left before Leunen scored five consecutive points to seal the win. He sank a three-pointer with 3:03 remaining for a 71-65 UO advantage, and his reverse layin on a baseline drive a minute later stretched the Ducks’ lead to 73-65.
“I think our guys will bounce back,” Oregon State coach Kevin Mouton said. “I’m really not into moral victories, honestly.”
Early on, it looked like Oregon State would suffer another lopsided defeat. Bryce Taylor’s three-pointer capped a 13-0 Oregon run that gave the Ducks an 18-7 lead.
Oregon State climbed back, with Calvin Haynes’ third three-pointer of the first half reducing Oregon’s lead to 23-22 with just under six minutes left.
Oregon led 33-32 at the half.
