It was deja vu at the 2008 Horse Butte 10-Mile Trail Run Sunday southeast of Bend.
The overall male and female finishers were the 2007 winners: Bend’s Andy Martin and Kristen Riley. Martin broke his 2007 course record by 45 seconds, finishing in a time of 57 minutes, 12 seconds. Riley, meanwhile, clocked in at 1:12.46, nearly three minutes ahead of the second-place female finisher, Amy Freeman of Bend.
Freeman finished the 10-mile single-track trail course in 1:15.34; both she and Riley were racing in the women’s 30-34 age division. Third-place female Devon Cosby-Helms of Seattle, an entry in the 25-29 age division, was just 13 seconds behind Freeman (1:15.47).
In the men’s field, Damon Kluck of Bend crossed the finish line at 1:03.37, taking second place overall as well as second in the men’s 30-34 age division. Bend’s Paul Parson, competing in the 40-44 age category, finished third in a time of 1:03.51.
One hundred and 63 finishers met the 10-mile race challenge Sunday. Faced with a mix of snow flurries, hail and spots of sunshine on the 35-degree morning, runners took on a winding, climbing trail on and around Horse Butte. The single-track route was lined with sagebrush and rabbitbrush and littered with rocks, creating tough terrain for racers.
Most of the participants in the third annual race were from Central Oregon, though a few in the field were from out of the area.
The Horse Butte 10-Mile Trail Run is a benefit for the Oregon Natural Desert Association, a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting and preserving Oregon’s High Desert.
