MOUNT BACHELOR — A collage of ski competition is under way, with 250 junior alpine racers taking part this weekend in the 2008 May Day Race.

The three-day event at Mt. Bachelor ski area began Friday and includes a ski-jumping competition, a cross-country ski race and two alpine ski races — giant slalom and super G.

On Friday, junior racers from throughout the Pacific Northwest were branching out of their alpine comfort zone and trying a few new disciplines. The host club, Bend-based Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, produced some winners in both the jumping and cross-country ski events.

MBSEF’s Tyler Horton won the J3 boys (ages 12-13) ski-jumping competition, with teammate Christian Schuster scoring a close second. In the J3 girls jumping competition, Jordan Schweitzer, racing for MBSEF, took second place behind Crystal Mountain Alpine Club’s Lily Eriksen.

MBSEF’s Tanner Olson was edged out by winner Fedya Myagkov of the Multnomah Athletic Club in the J4 boys (ages 10-11) jumping competition.

Skiers as young as 8 participated in the jumping event; younger local skiers placed below some tough competitors from areas outside of Central Oregon.

MBSEF skiers posted strong finishes in the cross-country ski race.

Christian Schuster and Knut Renton took first and second, respectively, in the boys J3 category. Schuster finished the 2-kilometer race in 7 minutes, 28 seconds, and Renton finished in 8:35.

In the boys J4 races, Casey Shannon was first with a winning time of 8:33, and Max Stamler finished second (8:50).

J4 MBSEF skier Vivian Hawkinson beat out the 24 other competitors in the girls 2K race, finishing in a time of 8:53.

Chase Ricker, Thomas Wimberly and R. Minam Cravens took the top three spots in the J5 boys (ages 8-9) 1K race, with Ricker’s top time a solid 3:35.

Competition continues today and Sunday at Bachelor with GS and super G races on Cliffhanger Run. Races begin at 8:30 a.m. each day.
