- In this television image released by China’s Xinhua News Agency, Chinese climbers, carrying the Olympic flame, make it to the top of the 29,035-foot peak of Mount Everest in the country’s Tibet region early today. Members of a mountaineering team carried the specially designed torch along with Chinese and Olympic flags to the top of the world’s tallest mountain.
This summer’s Olympic Games begin three months from today, a multibillion-dollar extravaganza of athletics, pageantry and architecture meant to drop an exclamation point behind China’s two-decade-long economic surge. China is investing a record $37 billion on everything from new stadiums to the most ambitious torch relay in history to prepare for the Games.
The International Olympics Committee has issued a reminder to athletes to refrain from political statements during the Games. Controversy aside, preparations are on pace for the Games, which will run Aug. 8 until Aug. 24.
