Gary “Gumpy” S Gumpert, of Prineville, died Sunday. He was 70.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Prineville Funeral Home.
Mr. Gumpert was born Sept. 16, 1937, in Bend, the son of Clyde and Sylva (Severence) Gumpert. He graduated from Crook County High School in 1955. He married Helene Swoboda on June 21, 1958, in Prineville. They later divorced. He married Daphne Lawson on Dec. 23, 1983, in Prineville.
Mr. Gumpert served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He served as a corporal while stationed at Ford Ord, Calif., and in Fairbanks, Alaska. He owned many businesses over the years, including a liquid fertilizer business, Gumpert Trucking, Airco, now Ray’s Welding Supplies, Juniper Products and multiple farms. He also logged as a gypo from 1959 to 1970 and helped build roads for the U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of Juniper Canyon Baptist Church. He enjoyed building, collecting antiques, old logging equipment and inventing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Clint, of Prineville, and Lee, of Los Angeles; three daughters, Cindy Meyers, of Hermiston, Tonya Gaylord, of Arkansas, and Tracy McMaster, of McCall, Idaho; a sister, Judy Boring, of Washington; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Juniper Canyon Baptist Church building fund.
