Blazing speed helps Outlaws finish second

EUGENE — On a hot day in Eugene, Cory McCaffrey had the 100-meter race of his life.
The Sisters senior ran a blistering 10.81-second 100 on Saturday in 90 degree heat, blowing away the field at the Sky-Em League district meet. McCaffrey’s time is the fourth-fastest mark in the state, regardless of classification, and he’s the first Class 4A sprinter to go under 11 seconds.
“His goal was to go under 11,” said Outlaws coach Bob Johnson. “He had a great start and won that thing by 10 or 12 meters.”
Led by McCaffrey, who also won the long jump an ran the anchor leg on the boys 1,600-meter relay that took first, Sisters placed second at the district meet behind Marist. The Spartans won the meet with 189.5 points, while the Outlaws scored 111.
Max Gruettner won the 400 and Andy Stahn (200) and Lee Elder (400) added runner-up finishes for Sisters.
La Pine’s boys, which finished in sixth place with 57.5 points, were led by Ty Slater’s first-place in the javelin and Read Griebel’s win in the pole vault.
In the girls meet, the Outlaws placed third with 78.5 points behind Cottage Grove (180 points) and Marist (158). Senior Kelsey Neilson won the triple jump and placed second in the high jump. Mackenzie Williams added a runner-up finish in the 400.
For La Pine, Maria Ramirez won the 800 and the 1,500, scoring 20 of the Hawks’ 64 points. Kassi Conditt added a win in the shot put and a second-place finish in the discus. La Pine finished in fifth place, 10 points ahead of Elmira (54 points) and 4.5 points behind Junction City (68.5).
