Multnomah sheriff plans to resign July 1

PORTLAND — Sheriff Bernie Giusto of Multnomah County plans to resign July 1.

His announcement Thursday came a little more than a week after a police standards committee recommended he be stripped of his badge because of evidence he lied nearly 20 years ago when he told his Oregon State Police supervisors he wasn’t having an affair with the wife of then-Gov. Neil Goldschmidt.

Giusto was a member of the governor’s security detail at the time.

The committee also determined that Giusto lied earlier this year when he said in a sworn statement that he didn’t remember ever being confronted by his supervisors about his relationship with Margie Goldschmidt.

Lying violates the state’s moral fitness standard required of all police officers.
