MYRTLE CREEK — Looking to own your own 18-hole golf course?

The Myrtle Creek Golf Course, a public course in southern Oregon, is in foreclosure and will go up for auction on June 30.

The Myrtle Creek Building Authority recently informed the city council of the auction. The land the course sits on is owned by the city and is leased to the building authority.

While the authority manages the course, it is owned by bondholders who fronted the initial funds to build it in 1997. The city is not liable for the debt, because the building authority is a non-profit corporation separate from Myrtle Creek.

The par-72 course is 6,637 yards from the longest tees. Designed by Graham Cooke, Myrtle Creek opened in 1997.

The course was in default by 1999. The foreclosure process started in the fall of 2007, according to Gregg Johnson, a partner at Ater Wynne law firm in Portland and the attorney representing bond trustee the Bank of New York.

The foreclosure sale includes the right to operate a golf course on the property, as well as facilities and equipment belonging to the building authority. Also included is 40 acres of outlying property pledged by the city to support payment of the bonds.

The course is also the dumping location for the city’s treated effluent, which diverts sewage from the South Umpqua River. City Administrator Aaron Cubic said the city would like to continue to use the course for that purpose.
