The Bend-La Pine School Board voted Tuesday to name the west-side elementary school currently under construction William E. Miller Elementary School.

The school is slated to open in fall 2009.

Miller was the second-generation owner of Miller Lumber, the oldest family-owned business in Bend. He was the president of the Chamber of Commerce and a one-time mayor.

Miller was also a big supporter of public schools in Bend, donating and selling below market price plots of land to the school district for new buildings. Miller Elementary, which will be located off Skyliners Road, sits on former Miller land.
