Philip Coady commanded in Gulf War

Philip Coady Jr., 66, a Navy rear admiral who commanded a 10-ship battle group during the Gulf War and, in retirement, spent a decade as president and chief executive of a veterans benefit organization, died June 30 at his home in Annandale, Va. He had pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer.

Coady, who served in the Navy from 1961 to 1995, was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was promoted to rear admiral in 1989 and commanded the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk battle group during the Gulf War. His final active-duty assignment was director of the Navy’s Surface Warfare Division.

His decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, six awards of the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals and three awards of the Navy Commendation Medal.

In retirement, he became a chartered financial consultant and a chartered life underwriter and headed the Navy Mutual Aid Association in Arlington, Va.
