SAN DIEGO — An actor who appeared in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” was charged with attempted murder Tuesday after police said he stabbed his former girlfriend more than 20 times.

Shelley Malil, 43, was scheduled to be arraigned today.

The victim, Kendra Beebe, was in critical condition Monday, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. No update on her condition was available Tuesday.

Malil played a co-worker of Steve Carell’s title character in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and has appeared in commercials and TV shows including “NYPD Blue” and “Scrubs.”
