Seahawks trim roster to limit

SEATTLE — The Seahawks made roster moves Tuesday that got them down to the NFL limit of 75 players, which is how many players they can have until Friday.

The team released wide receiver Joel Filani and former Washington cornerback Omare Lowe. It also placed second-year linebacker Will Herring on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a non-football injury and tackle William Robinson and long snapper Tyler Schmitt on injured reserve.

Schmitt was drafted in the sixth round this year specifically to provide stability after the Seahawks used three long snappers last season. He played in one exhibition game.

Tim Lindsey was brought in to handle the job after Schmitt suffered a back injury during training camp, and Lindsey has performed ably in games.

Lowe, a six-year NFL veteran, gave up the two-point conversion that won Monday’s exhibition game for the San Diego Chargers. He was a longshot to make the team.

Herring, a fifth-round pick in 2007, must sit out the first six games of the season per NFL rules. After that, he can start practicing with the Seahawks if they deem him ready.

The Seahawks have 22 players to release by Saturday to get down to their final 53-man roster. A few of those released could come back as practice-squad players.

Wallace sees action

Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace came on in the fourth quarter Monday after Charlie Frye left the game with an injury. Wallace had dealt with a sore groin in the days leading up to the game, but had to play because coach Mike Holmgren felt he was the only option he had with starter Matt Hasselbeck out.

“You just go out there and try to play,” Wallace said after throwing an interception that sealed the Chargers’ win with 1:30 to play. “At that point of the game, it’s difficult for anybody to come in and try to play.”

Wallace said he was just trying to make a play downfield with the Seahawks trailing and facing a third-and-seven. His pass for Logan Payne was high and tipped into the hands of the Chargers’ Brian Bonner.

“You make mistakes. You try to force balls late in a game, trying to win,” Wallace said. “You’ve just got to move on.”

Notes:

—The team did not have an update on the MRI results for LB Lofa Tatupu and Frye, who suffered knee injuries Monday. Their status should be addressed today when practice resumes.

—P Ryan Plackemeier punted in his first game back from a torn pectoral muscle suffered in June. He had a net average of 42.3 yards per punt and blasted punts of 60 and 58 yards, but made sure to keep his head up so as not to get involved in a tackle and re-injure himself. “The big focus this week was getting the punt off,” Plackemeier said. “Whole thing was great. No pain anywhere.”

—The Seahawks did not practice Tuesday. That will leave them with only one full day of practice before the Oakland game on Friday, as the team typically does a short game-situation walk-through session the day before exhibition games.
