It took search and rescue crews nearly three hours to rescue an injured mountain bike rider on Flag Line Trail northeast of Dutchman Flat on Saturday, according to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Deschutes County dispatchers received a call around 11:30 a.m. that Edward Wakefield, 38, of Bend, had injured himself when he fell while riding his mountain bike with a friend. Wakefield, an experienced mountain bike rider, was wearing a helmet, but couldn’t make his way back from the trail on his own, according to the release.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue responded with all-terrain vehicles and medical personnel. Because of the challenging terrain, three rescue teams tried to reach Wakefield from different directions. He was located 5½ miles northeast of Dutchman Flat on the Flag Line Trail.
Medical personnel finally reached Wakefield around 2 p.m., when he was treated and transported by sled on the back of an ATV to Century Drive.
Wakefield was treated and released Saturday by St. Charles Bend.
