Military Notes
Navy Seaman Apprentice Johnathan Agner , of Milwaukie, graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2001 graduate of Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie. He is the son of Sylvia Duncan, of Tigard, and Phillip Agner, of Bend. •
Navy Seaman Apprentice Kara Nelson , of Bend, graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2007 graduate of Mountain View High School, and she is the daughter of Jeff Nelson, of Bend. • Steven Craig , of Madras, was recently promoted to the rank of Navy Petty Officer Second Class. He was promoted while serving with the Third Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2003, and he is the son of Jeniffer Moore, of Madras. •
Navy Seaman Recruit Thaddeus Anderson , of Sisters, graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Sisters High School, and he is the son of William and Valarie Anderson, of Sisters. •
U.S. Army Private Michael Kimmel , of Prineville, graduated from Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He is a 2006 graduate of Crook County High School, and he is the son of M.G. Kimmel, of Prineville. •
U.S. Air Force Major Stephen Long has been deployed to Afghanistan with the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing. He directs and coordinates all medical personnel and assets in Afghanistan. He is a 1980 graduate of Redmond High School and a 1982 graduate of Central Oregon Community College. He earned a master’s degree in 1996 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Long is the son of Phyllis Long, of Redmond.
College Notes
The following students have been named to the 2008 summer “straight A” Scholastic Honor Roll at Oregon State University: Jordan Doi, Lene Lang, Spencer Marx, Emily Moulton and Sheldon Steward, all of Bend; Santa Navarro, of Culver; and Jennifer De Korte and Ishan Patel, both of Redmond. The following have been named to the summer Honor Roll for a 3.5 grade point average or better: Christopher Anderson, Deanna Dewitt, Brooke Johnston, Ryan Lujan, Samantha Murillo, Trevor Schmidt and Lindsay Woodward, all of Bend; and Michael Harris and Shani Pinkham , both of Redmond.
Youth Notes
The following high school students have been selected as semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program: Julia Hodecker, of Bend High School, Laura Krull, home-schooled in Bend, Todd Hagen, Alexandra Middleton, Tadd Phillips and Emily Villano, all of Summit High School, and Hayden Stein, of Sisters High School.
