Bend takes 4-0 win over Madras

MADRAS — Austin Crook netted a hat trick and led the Lava Bears to a boys soccer win in their first Intermountain Conference game this season, beating host Madras 4-0 on Tuesday.

“He’s a great player, and when he’s on, he’s dangerous,” Bend coach Nils Eriksson said about his star junior, who scored his first goal in the third minute on a header.

Crook also scored at the eight- and 49-minute marks.

Madras coach Paul Brown also credited Crook as being the difference-maker.

“He’s an excellent player, and he got the job done,” said Brown, whose White Buffaloes (0-1 IMC, 4-1-3 overall) host Crook County on Thursday.

Bend senior Zach Reynolds tacked on an insurance goal for his team with three minutes left in the game, sealing the 4-0 shutout.

Ryan Candella, Cole Timm, Dan Secor and Tadd Kilmer each recorded an assist for the Lava Bears (1-0 IMC, 6-1 overall). Bend plays at The Dalles-Wahtonka on Thursday and Madras hosts Crook County on the same day.

PRINEVILLE — Richie Carrillo scored the game-winning goal in the final three minutes of the match, converting a free kick to break a 4-4 tie. The Cowboys (1-0 Intermountain Conference, 2-4 overall) led 4-2 at the half. Carrillo ended the game with a hat trick and Luis Toledo and Henry Ambriz added goals as well. Crook County plays at Madras on Thursday.

Redmond 1

SALEM — Bryan Murguia scored the Panthers’ only goal as Redmond dropped to 1-4-1 in the Central Valley Conference. South Salem (4-1-1 CVC), which moved into second place in the league standings, led 2-1 at the half. The Panthers (2-4-2 overall) start the second half of CVC play with a home game on Friday against McKay.

CULVER — Junior midfielder Joel Vega scored three goals to lead the Bulldogs to their second Class 3A-2A-1A Special District 5 victory of the season. Aaron Phillips gave the White Tigers (1-5 league, 1-5 overall) a 1-0 lead early in the game, but two goals by Vega and one by Theo Perez put Culver ahead 3-1 at halftime. The Bulldogs (2-4 league, 2-4-1 overall) play at Irrigon on Oct. 9. Central Christian hosts Irrigon on Saturday. GIRLS SOCCER

REDMOND — Rae Keener scored a penalty kick to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game, but South Salem reeled off four consecutive goals to close the match. Leading 2-1 at the half, the Saxons scored on two free kicks, a header and a rebound. The loss drops Redmond’s Central Valley Conference record to 4-2.

The Panthers (5-2 overall) play at McKay on Saturday.

The Dalles-Wahtonka 2

THE DALLES — Senior goalkeeper Necole Ontko stopped 22 shots for the Cowgirls, but it was not enough to defeat the Eagle Indians in both team’s Intermountain Conference opener. Crook County posted 23 shots on goal in the loss. The Cowgirls (0-1 IMC, 0-7-1 overall) host Madras on Thursday.

Cottage Grove 2

SISTERS — Loyrn Cummins scored from over 30 yards out to tie the game at the end of regulation before the Outlaws and Lions both went scoreless in two overtime periods. Sisters trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Marin Allen turned a Cummins’ cross into a goal in the 63rd minute to tie the game 1-1.

Cottage Grove took a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute before Cummins’ final-minute heroics. The Outlaws (4-1-1 Sky-Em League, 5-1-1 overall) play at La Pine on Monday.

EUGENE — His team was shut out and lost by 11, but La Pine coach Scott Winslow came out of his team’s Sky-Em League match happy with the Hawks’ improvement. “Am I disappointed with the outcome? Sure,” said Winslow, whose team is now 2-4 in league play after the loss. “But Marist is the standard. We came out of this ahead of where we started.” The host Spartans scored early and often, racking up a 6-0 count by halftime. The Hawks play at Creswell on Thursday. VOLLEYBALL

SALEM — Taylor Varneau and Laurel Welborn both recorded nine kills, but the Panthers could not hold on after a strong start.

Redmond dropped to 2-4 in the Central Valley Conference with the loss. Kurin Matter added 34 digs for the Panthers, who host McKay on Thursday.

The Lava Bears rallied after dropping the first game to win their third Intermountain Conference match of the season. Taylor Torkelson led Bend with nine kills and three blocks while Makenzie McIntyre added eight kills, five aces and 15 digs for the Lava Bears (3-5 IMC). Dyklesia Plazola paced the White Buffaloes by going 18 of 18 from the service line and recording five kills, nine digs and one block. Hannah Mikkelson went 21 of 24 serving and added 10 kills and 11 digs for Madras. The White Buffaloes (1-6 IMC) host Crook County on Thursday. Bend plays at Mountain View on the same day.

Cougar junior libero Bethany Durre posted 13 digs on top of what Mountain View coach Mallory Larranaga called perfect serve-receive passing in the Cougs sweep of the Eagle Indians. Junior middle blocker Shelby Hollister led Mountain View in kills with nine. Sophomore Sarah Roshak recorded seven kills and seven blocks at the net, and sophomore Alexi Dull served three key aces to counter the Eagle Indians’ momentum in the second game. The Cougars (6-2 Intermountain Conference) hosts Bend on Thursday.

PRINEVILLE — The defending back-to-back Class 3A state-champion Burns Hilanders handed Crook County its first nontournament loss of the season. Senior middle blocker Krissi Kemper led the Cowgirls in kills with 17. Teammates Casey Loper and Katie Leavitt added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Tessa Romine paced the Cowgirl defense with nine digs. Crook County coach Rosie Honl called the nonleague loss “a great turning point to start working harder.” The Cowgirls play at Madras on Thursday.

COTTAGE GROVE — Felicia Pledger led Sisters with 21 kills and the Outlaws improved to 5-1 in Sky-Em League play, good for second in the league standings behind an undefeated Marist squad. Dani Thompson offered up 27 assists and Jessi Snow posted 18 digs in the win. If Cottage Grove upsets Marist on Thursday, the Outlaws and the Spartans would be tied for first place. Sisters is at Philomath on Thursday for a nonleague match before traveling to Pleasant Hill on Tuesday.

LA PINE — The Hawks’ Kaylin Elms served up four aces and recorded five kills in La Pine’s second Sky-Em League win of the season.

Rachelle Allen also had five kills for the Hawks (2-4 Sky-Em League), who host another league match on Thursday, this time facing Pleasant Hill. Last time the two teams met, the match went to five games with the Billies eventually taking the win.

CULVER — Kymber Wofford paced the Bulldogs with six kills, 17 digs and one block in Culver’s Tri-River Conference loss. The Bulldogs played well in spurts, according to Culver coach Wendy Thompson, but were not consistent. Justine Lofting added two kills, four aces, two blocks and 10 digs for the Bulldogs (1-8 Tri-River). Culver plays at Delphian on Thursday.

GILCHRIST — Keeping the score close all night, the Grizzlies managed to steal game three but were unable to keep the momentum, losing by four points in game four. Both Jenny Scevers and Kali Smith recorded two blocks and two kills for the home team in the tight Mountain Valley League match. Gilchrist (4-4 MVL) hosts Butte Falls on Friday, a team the Grizzlies have beaten once already this season.
