The Internal Revenue Service has tax refund and economic stimulus checks for more than 4,000 Oregonians that it would like to get into taxpayers’ hands, but it needs correct mailing addresses — and soon.

The checks were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.

People who haven’t received their economic stimulus checks need to update their address with the IRS by Nov. 28. The IRS says there are 2,824 undeliverable stimulus checks waiting to be mailed to Oregonians. The checks average $550. The law requires them to be mailed by Dec. 31.

To check the status of a stimulus payment and update an address, visit www.irs.gov and use the “Where’s My Stimulus Payment?” tool, or call 866-234-2942.

There also are 1,408 tax refund checks for Oregonians that were returned to the IRS, with an average refund of $930. The checks will be sent as soon as taxpayers update their address.

To check the status of a refund and update an address, visit www.irs.gov and use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. Taxpayers must submit a Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2007 return. To check on a refund and update an address over the phone, call 800-829-1954.
