Notes: The tournament benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. Woods will return to play next year. He hasn’t played since having knee surgery after his U.S. Open victory. … Donald won the 2005 title. … The Sherwood course is at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains. Douglas Fairbanks’ 1922 silent “Robin Hood” was shot on the scenic property, leading to the Sherwood name.

Purse: $1.35 million. Winner’s share: $224,290.
Television: Golf Channel (Thursday-Sunday, 6:30-9:30 a.m.).
Last year: South Africa’s James Kingston beat England’s Oliver Wilson by a stroke at Pearl Valley, closing with a 1-under 71 for a 4-under 284 total.
Last week: South Africa’s Richard Sterne won the Alfred Dunhill Championship, beating Johan Edfors and Robert Rock by a stroke at Leopard Creek.
Notes: Ernie Els, the 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2006 winner, tops the South African contingent along with Kingston, Masters champion Trevor Immelman, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, Rory Sabbatini and Charl Schwartzel. Goosen, Clark and Immelman are two-time winners. Clark won the Australian Open on Sunday, beating Australia’s Mathew Goggin on the first hole of a playoff. … Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Darren Clarke and Len Mattiace also are in the field. … Gary Player won a record 13 times, the first in 1956 and the last in 1981. Bobby Locke won nine times. … The Jack Nicklaus-designed Pearl Valley course opened in November 2003.
