- Bend High Desert Rotary Club member Fritz Johnson, 50, of Bend, delivers a bag of gifts to brothers Bryan Medina, 7, left, and Harvey Medina, 3, while their mother, Maura Medina, watches at their apartment in Bend on Friday.
Members of local Rotary Clubs spent Friday delivering gifts to needy children and senior citizens in the Bend and La Pine areas as part of the annual Tree of Joy effort.
The Salvation Army finds people in need of assistance, and Rotary members collect gifts for them by setting up a tree decorated with gift tags, which spell out the item or items they need.
Members of the public visit the tree, which was set up in The Old Mill District, select a tag, purchase the item and return it to the tree. Rotary members then wrap the items and deliver them.
In its 20th year, the local Tree of Joy is jointly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bend, the Rotary Club of Greater Bend, the Rotary Club of Bend-Mt. Bachelor and the Rotary Club of Bend-High Desert, as well as the Salvation Army.
