Safeway ending Arco gas program

Due to a lack of demand, Safeway Inc. will scrap its Power Pump Program, which gave customers who bought $100 or more worth of groceries a 10-cent-per-gallon discount at Arco gas stations. The program is still available for customers who buy their gas at Safeway gas stations, said Dan Floyd, the company’s Portland-based spokesman. In Central Oregon, the only Safeway store with a gas station is in Madras.
“We just were not seeing the benefit to it,” Floyd said. “People were not using (the credits) as much as Safeway would have liked.”
Customers will have until March 31 to use their remaining credits in the program at local Arco stations. After that, they will need to redeem the credits in Madras, Floyd said.
