Hearing set on new Deschutes Sheriff’s Office shooting range

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office may have found a new spot for its shooting range, and Deschutes County commissioners are expected to hear about the opportunity at a meeting Monday.
The Bend Trap Club has offered to lease to the Sheriff’s Office a 120-acre property adjacent to its new facility. The Sheriff’s Office currently operates its shooting range on more than 200 acres of county-owned land north of state Highway 126, and shares it with the Redmond Rod and Gun Club. But Deschutes County wants to put that land up for sale and use the funds for its jail expansion.
The Bend Trap Club’s 120-acre property would be exclusively for the Sheriff’s Office.
Also on Monday, the commissioners are expected to hear a progress report on the expansion and remodel of the Deschutes County jail. The latest cost estimate adds $12.5 million to the total cost of the expansion.
The original cost of the jail expansion was slated to be about $31.4 million, but in August commissioners discussed adding more area to the remodeled facility. That would bring the total cost of the project to about $44 million.
In addition to the Deschutes County Commission, other com- missions and councils will also meet this week.
In Redmond, the City Council will meet Tuesday and is expected to vote on whether to change the Redmond enterprise zone to include lands in Deschutes County and the city of Sisters. The current enterprise zone, slated to expire in June, is part of the Oregon Enterprise Zone program. The statewide program seeks to promote economic development in disadvantaged areas. It offers tax abatement for some new or expanding businesses.
In Prineville on Tuesday, the City Council plans to meet to discuss grant applications and hear an update on the ODOT grants the city applied for. The Madras City Council also is expected to meet on Tuesday. At that meeting, the council may authorize selling five vehicles and will also consider a request by the East Cascade Retirement Community for tax exemption.
La Pine’s City Council has scheduled a work session on Wednesday where Pat Kliewer, a historic planner, will give a presentation on the inventory of historic buildings in the area.
Also on Wednesday, the Jefferson County Commission will meet to discuss limiting regular work hours and reducing elected officials’ salaries for fiscal year 2009-10.
If the employee work-hours resolution passes, all county employees would be limited to 37.5 regular hours per week, except for patrol deputies and sergeants, corrections officers and technicians, and jail cooks. All elected officials would also see a 6.25 percent salary decrease for fiscal year 2009-10.
