Students from Bend’s Cascade Middle School won first place at the Destination ImagiNation state tournament in Corvallis last weekend.

The team, named Uber Beesknees, will compete at the global finals in Knoxville, Tenn., in May. It is made up of five students: seventh-graders Jessie Oberto, 13; William Dalquist, 13; Evan Heaton, 12; and Nicole Cuddihy, 13; and sixth-grader Brendan Cuddihy, 11.

The students also earned an award for their spirit, teamwork, volunteerism and sportsmanship.

Destination ImagiNation is a program involving creative problem-solving. Teams choose from five challenges that test teamwork, creativity and critical-thinking skills, and work on a challenge over 17 weeks. Students then compete against other teams. The Cascade team competed in an improvisational challenge. The team will face off against 17,000 other students at the global finals at the University of Tennessee.
