Dec. 18, 1926- April 19, 2009

After a courageous battle with cancer, Jack Smith passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 19. Born in Portland, Oregon, to MC and Vesta Smith, Jack spent his childhood in Blodgett, Oregon. He graduated from Philomath High School in 1948 and immediately left for the Navy, serving in the Pacific throughout WW II. Upon his return, he enrolled at Oregon State University where he attended for two years.

In 1950, he married Flo Adell Scarth, the love of his life, in Corvallis, Oregon. They moved to Klamath Falls, where he finished his degree at OTI. After graduation, Jack went to work for the Boy Scouts of America as a District Scout Executive; a profession that he pursued for the next 39 years. He began and chose to end his career working in the Modoc Area Council and spending many summers at Camp Makualla on Crescent Lake. In between, he and his family lived throughout the Pacific Northwest serving scouts in Albany, Oregon, Kalispell, Montana, Wenatchee, Washington, and Aberdeen, Washington. Jack’s enthusiasm for scouting and love of outdoor adventure touched many scouters, young and old.

After retirement from the Boy Scouts, Jack went into business with his son Greg at Thompson Pump and Irrigation where he continued to work until his illness prevented it in 2008.

Jack enjoyed the outdoors, sports, and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Flo Adell, of Bend; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Judy Smith of Bend; daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Bill Johnson of Lakeview, Oregon; a sister, Elizabeth, of Albany, Oregon; and a brother, Gene, of Hamilton, Montana. His pride and joy were his five grandchildren lovingly known as the ‘good ones’ Ryan, Angie (McKinnell) and Amy Smith, and Joel and Jacque (Bruns) Johnson.

A celebration of life is planned for June 6th, at the home of Greg and Judy Smith.

Contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to the Crater Lake Council for the Boy Scouts of America, Camp Makualla Memorial Fund, 3039 Hanley Rd, Central Point, OR 97502 or Central Oregon Partners in Care, 2075 NE Wyatt Court, Bend OR, 97701.
