Central Oregonians are among the leaders after the first round of the Central Oregon Shootout, a three-day amateur golf tournament at Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Black Butte Ranch Big Meadows course, and Eagle Crest Resort’s Ridge Course in Redmond.

R.C. Mench and Albert King of Bend combined to shoot a 64 at Aspen Lakes in the first-round scramble to put themselves in a four-way tie for first in the gross division of the tournament, which features 300 golfers from around the Northwest and beyond.

Bill Swancutt of Salem, a former Oregon State football star, and his playing partner, Reid Hellbusch, combined for a 58 to put themselves in a two-way tie for first place in the first net division.

The format for the first round was a two-person scramble, which will be followed with a round of best ball today. The tournament concludes with a Chapman event on Sunday. Each flight will play a different course each day.
