An official state dirt? House picks Jory soil

SALEM — There’s an official Oregon state bird, rock, fossil and a whole lot more. Make way for official Oregon dirt.

The Oregon House on Tuesday easily passed a bill to bestow the honor on Jory soil, named after Jory Hill in Marion County. Soil scientists say Jory Hill has dirt that is most representative of the state.

The state dirt is in line behind a House measure approving the Dungeness crab as the official Oregon crustacean.

Both await their fate in the Senate.
