The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is giving boaters a chance to receive a boater’s education card without having to take an online test.

To operate a motorboat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more, boaters must have an education card. The Sheriff’s Office is offering a classroom course that includes a study session and test. The class, taught by a deputy, takes about two hours.

After its successful completion, a certificate that can be mailed to the Oregon State Marine Board will be provided. The marine board will issue the education card.

The next class is being held at 7 p.m., May 16, at the Sheriff’s Office, 675 N.W. Cherry Lane, Madras.
