- A member of the Fast Friends team, Connelly Cox, 7, left, jumps through the hoop obstacle beside Dylan Cays, 8, of the Seven Peaks Eagles team. The two boys, both of Bend, were competing in the Mini PPP at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend.
Alison Beaulieu, 7, didn’t take the Mini Pole Pedal Paddle lightly. In the weeks running up to Sunday’s race, Alison, of Bend, worked on her bike-riding skills.
“At my house, I rode my bike around the neighborhood … a lot,” Alison said.
That training paid off. Alison and her team, Spaghetti and Meatballs, won the division for first- and second-grade girls.
Unlike the Pole Pedal Paddle for adults, held on Saturday, there wasn’t any skiing in Sunday’s race, but kids rode bikes and ran sprints. They also traversed an obstacle course on which they had to run under a parachute, jump hurdles, climb walls and jump through hoops.
More than 180 teams of six kids each — dressed in colorful uniforms that included tie-dye shirts, sunglasses and bandanas — competed in the event, which centered around the Les Schwab Amphitheater.
Teams began on river rafts, rowing to the amphitheater. From there, one team member rode a bike. Once the bike rider finished, four teammates ran the obstacle course. To complete the race, one teammate sprinted around the obstacle course in a distance run.
Alison’s teammate, Tatum Elshire, 8, of Bend, competed for the second year and was pleased with how she did on the obstacle course.
“It went well,” Tatum said. “I was not as nervous this year.”
Not everyone was thrilled going into the race. Fast Friends team member Emily Olson, 7, of Bend, said she was surprised how much she enjoyed it.
“I liked it, actually,” Emily said. “When I looked at the map, I thought (the race) was too big.”
The obstacle course was a popular event with many of the athletes on Sunday. Trey Pressey, 6, competed on the co-ed Fast Friends team and said his favorite part of the day was climbing the course’s A-shaped wall.
“I like climbing,” Trey said.
